Event description

Description

This pan-European conference, hosted by POPS (Partners of Prisoners and Families Support Group) and in partnership with Children of Prisoners Europe (COPE), will examine what progress looks like in the English and Welsh Criminal Justice System from a child’s perspective. Utilising reflections on progress from the past, the conference will highlight recent milestones in public policy both internationally and within England and Wales, and the growing evidence base for a fundamental change in approach to ‘maintaining’ child-parent relationships.

The conference will explore developments in the use of technology to support child-parent relationships and tackle what ‘progress’ within the sphere of public perception and media attitudes might mean for children and families of prisoners. It will also consider the ethical dilemmas that progress in this area can present.

Featuring the contributions and reflections of young people, the conference will also include panel discussions throughout the day to further explore the key themes.

The conference will take place at Manchester Metropolitan University in Manchester. Lord Farmer, British businessman, philanthropist, former treasurer of the Conservative Party, life peer in the House of Lords and author of the recent Farmer Review on prisoners and strengthening family ties commissioned by the UK government, will give the keynote. The conference will be chaired by COPE President, Lucy Gampell, OBE.
