Event description

Description

Safety is the top priority in the railway industry, and for good reason. With increasing connectivity and consumer demand for ubiquitous Internet access, cyber security within the industry is now vital to ensure that safety-critical systems remain protected against remote attack.

In addition to the embedded systems and various communication technologies that have been present on trains for some time, we are now starting to see more conventional IT such as IP networks and standard commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment. Connectivity between these systems provides great opportunities to the rail industry, but the associated risks should not be underestimated.

Highlighting the expertise within NCC Group's Transport Assurance Practice, Jim McKenney and Paul Dart, Rail Technical Leads for North America and the rest of the world respectively, will discuss some of the many potential attack vectors exposed within the rail industry, touching on signalling, telecoms, vehicle and passenger equipment.

The duo will then propose strategies that can be employed to reduce the risks of malicious attacks, which if not adequately addressed, may impact safety and the personal data of passengers.
