Event description

Description

Due to popular demand following the sell-out of 'Surviving Summer' conference in City Hall on 13th June, we are holding a second identical conference in Keighley to give more people the chance to participate on 19th July.

'Surviving Summer' is a free conference for community, voluntary and statutory practitioners to come together for an information and knowledge exchange aimed at supporting our more vulnerable families to thrive over the summer holidays.

As the summer holidays approach, for thousands of local families the six-week school break can be marred by acute financial stress and the threat of holiday hunger.

The conference will be opened by the Lord Mayor Cllr Doreen Lee with guest speakers Cathy Henwood from Healthy Holidays giving the national and local picture of holiday provision and family support. The event will be closed by John Grogan MP for Keighley.

Through four workshops, delegates will explore and exchange knowledge about support and provision available locally to help our families thrive during the holidays.

Each delegate can chose two of the four workshops chosen on the day with refreshments provided. Workshops offered are:

  1. Thriving families
  2. Benefits and Universal Credit
  3. Helping Households
  4. Money management

The conference will be followed by five road-shows taking place around the district from 23nd-27th July at the start of the summer holidays. Information generated at the conference will help shape delivery and content of these public road shows to support families in getting the help they need to thrive.

The road shows will be aimed at supporting families to reduce their summer holiday costs by giving information covering:

  • Low cost/ no cost holiday ideas
  • Where to access inexpensive/ no cost food
  • Ideas to reduce other daily costs like energy bills
  • Where to get debt, benefit and other financial help
