Kellie in Winter
Overview
Explore Kellie Castle in the winter with our exciting Guided Tours focusing on the lives of Hew Lorimer, sculptor, and Mary McLeod Wylie, artist. They were the first of the Lorimer family to live in the Castle over the winter. Discover the home where they lived, created and raised their family, and learn how they shaped the Castle into what it is today.
Hew and Mary began renting the castle in 1941 before purchasing the estate from the Earl of Mar and Kellie in 1948. They made the Castle their own, with many of their design choices and original furniture still in place within the building. In 1970, after Mary's passing, Hew sold the Castle to the National Trust for Scotland, preserving his family home for generations to come. Hew continued to live and work in the Castle, sculpting in his studio in the stables and acting as Property Manager for a further 20 years.
