Event Details

New for Kent Design! - a two-day study tour of Bristol, Gloucestershire and Swindon. A chance to see some exciting new developments and hear from their designers and planners and to network with colleagues from all over Kent.

Designing new neighbourhoods is primarily about creating a sense of community and place. How can an infrastructure of shared spaces be created? How can we encourage a sense of civility and neighbourly spirit in new developments, in both urban and rural settings?

We will study the urban environments of the Bristol’s old docks through two ambitious mixed-use housing schemes, conceived through the idea of creating community and place in a heritage context. We will visit a pioneering green development on the edge of the city. On day two we will visit two new rural communities that cater for the growing needs of family life and retirement.

Site visits, tours and talks include:

Architecture Centre, Bristol.
Tour/talk: Wapping Wharf, Bristol - Mark Osbourne, Director, Alec French Architects
Tour/talk: Hanham Hall
Evening tour/talk: Paintworks, Bristol (attendees can dine nearby).
Tour/talk: Steepleton Retirement Community, Tetbury - Stephen Proctor, Proctor & Matthews Architects

All other site visits, tour guides/speakrs to be confirmed.
