Key Concepts in Early Years Mathematical Development - East Northumberland
Event Information
Description
The focus for Early Years (EY) work has progressed to support practitioners at each stage of their development. For practitioners who are new to EY, or with limited EY maths experience and training, there is a project that explores key concepts in early mathematical development and effective pedagogies that support EY mathematics learning. For experienced EY practitioners (3+ years) looking to develop aspects of their practice, there are focused projects that will enhance practice on a particular theme in EY maths. These projects will enable participants to review practice, consider current research and develop their leadership capacity.
The programme, which is free to attend, runs over 3 full days, 6th December 2018, 14th February 2019, 2nd May 2019
We will also be releasing dates for this programme to run in two other locations in Northumberland.
Who is this for?
This workgroup is aimed at Reception teachers - particularly those who are new to teaching (within the last 3 years) or those who are new to Reception. The workgroup is designed to develop subject knowledge of early mathematical development in the Reception year and how this can feed into the mastery approaches used in KS1 and KS2.
Work Group activity
- 3 days of workshops with other practitioners on the programme (various locations)
- Independent study and setting-based work including gap tasks and evaluation
- Online discussion as part of a professional community
- Support and mentoring from Work Group Lead
Intended Outcomes
New practitioners and those with limited experience will increase their own subject knowledge and develop effective pedagogies around EY maths teaching. Through understanding the principles and pedagogies of EY best practice, practitioners will be able to provide children with access to deep mathematical understanding.
More experienced practitioners will increase their knowledge base, engage with research, analyse their own practice and collaborate with peers. They will be able to share their new knowledge and approaches with colleagues to increase levels of children’s engagement and confidence in maths.
Expectations of participants and their schools
Applicants wishing to explore key concepts in early mathematical development do not need any previous experience. All participants must be able and willing to commit to participate fully in all elements of the programme.
The participant’s school/setting must have the capacity and commitment to support them throughout the programme.
This Work Group is free of charge.
When booking you will be asked to give your NCETM Username. We ask for this as we will use the NCETM website to coordinate your programme evaluations, in order to report to the DfE. If you do not already have an NCETM username, please create one here https://www.ncetm.org.uk/join
Data Privacy
As part of our role in leading the Great North Maths Hub, we collect and hold a certain amount of data about individuals involved in our work. The data includes name, role (with respect to hub work), school, email address, NCETM username and (in some cases) telephone number. The agreement between us and the Department of Education requires us to monitor and evaluate our work as a Maths Hub, and this is the legal basis for the data that we hold, on, for example, participation in the Work Groups that we coordinate. Such data is reported on a regular basis to the NCETM.
