Event description

Description

Key Stage 3: Infusing and Assessing Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities (TS&PC) through Teaching Schemes and Lesson Plans (Two-Day Course)

Course Dates: Tuesday 29 January 2019 and Tuesday 12 March 2019

Intended Audience

Heads of Department and TS&PC Coordinators

Key Stage 3 teachers are invited to attend a two-day practical course to support the infusion and assessment of TS&PC through the development of skills infused lessons and the development of assessment rubrics.

Teachers who register for this course are committing to attending both days and fully engaging with the sharing of practice.

Outline and Purpose

Aim

To identify, incorporate and assess TS&PCs using teaching and learning activities.

Objectives

  • Identify TS&PC relevant to subject specific learning.
  • Develop learning intentions that include a skills focus.
  • Revise teaching and learning activities ensuring they facilitate the development of identified TS&PC.
  • Plan a rubric to support assessment of progression.
  • Engage in collaborative sharing of practice.
  • Take risks for learning.

This course provides teachers with opportunities to:

  • engage in a course that is research informed and has been developed based on feedback from teachers;
  • become empowered to strengthen their own and their department’s professionalism and expertise in the development of the TS&PC, helping to meet the challenging educational needs of young people in the 21st Century;
  • build on and develop the skills framework articulated in the Northern Ireland Curriculum in an explicit way;
  • engage in effective practice through individualised learning on Day 1, to enable the replication and embedding of the process back in school with departmental colleagues;
  • reflect on their learning through the use of a ‘teacher’s log book’;
  • engage in collaborative sharing of practice on Day 2, providing feedback on personal and pupil experiences of teaching and engagement with a skills infused lesson and the use of an assessment rubric;
  • evaluate their experience through an online evaluation form circulated to all attendees. Feedback from the evaluation will be used to inform future development of professional learning programmes; and
  • Access a Fronter room which will support teachers who wish to collaborate as a community of practice and build capacity within and between schools. It will provide a mechanism for accessing and sharing resources and to communicate through an online discussion forum.
