Event description

Description

A mini festival within a festival! An immersive exploration of the development of the keyboard instrument from the early clavichord to today’s cutting-edge technologies. To bring this all to life, we welcome to Deal world-renowned performers and leading academics.

OPEN WORKSHOPS SCHEDULE:

• 2.30pm: Try the instruments – an opportunity to try the various instruments discussed, personally guided by today’s experts.

• 3.15pm: The Early Keyboard – Professor John Irving demonstrates the mechanisms and music of the early keyboards – clavichord, harpsichord and fortepiano.

• 4.15pm to 5.00pm: The Modern Keyboard – Dr Andrew McPherson, Rolf Hind and Paul Max Edlin discuss and demonstrate the development of the keyboard from the modern grand piano to new innovations including TouchKeys.

Bring your class to one, two or all three of the above FREE open workshops.

OTHER INFO:

COST - Attendance is FREE to young people at local Kent schools, and to accompanying staff and their parents.

BOOKING - You will be asked to fill in a short booking form, which indicates exactly how many young people, staff and parents/carers will be attending. We will need this in advance of the workshops, and cannot guarantee space if you turn up unexpectedly on the day. We are limiting each school to bring only one class, in order that other schools can benefit from the workshops.

TARGET YEAR GROUP - KS3 & KS4

GETTING THERE - We advise that you attend the concert from your school via walking bus as there is limited parking locally. If you are bringing a coach, please be in touch and we can assist with parking advice.

NOTE ABOUT THE AUDIENCE - These workshops are also open to the general public, so please be aware of this in advance. We need to ensure that all students are accompanied by your school staff at all times (to toilets, and so on) and that they need to be on their very best behaviour throughout (of which we have no doubt that they will be, of course!). Please ensure that students bring a bottle of water or squash (and small snack if needed) with them to the workshop if needed.
