Description

"The Materials of Sleep in Early Modern England"

Beginning with a close examination of an early eighteenth-century linen bed-sheet housed in the collections of the Museum of London, this paper examines the role that sleeping materials played in curating early modern sleep routines. The material qualities, manufacture and maintenance of beds and bedding textiles will be examined, alongside their broader cultural meanings, to reflect on some of the physical, temporal and conceptual dimensions of sleep's daily practice.
