Lifelong entrepreneur Brian Donnelly will deliver a presentation on how he founded and built Constellar; a $123m Silicon Valley start-up.
Brian’s presentation will detail the journey from being a one man UK start-up, to becoming a US company raising a $3m Series A investment round. Subsequent Series B, C and D rounds provided $30m to grow the team to 160 and the customer base to 70.
Following the sale of Constellar, Brian returned to Birmingham to found Synapse - his new start-up - at the Innovation Birmingham Campus.
Synapse has grown revenues from £300,000 in 2012 to £1.3m 2014. It's already a profitable, cash positive business with reference-able Blue Chip customers.
Brian will compare the US/UK business, team and investment cultures, as well as the relative merits of the customers and the economic and legislative climates.
He will close with a snapshot of how Synapse is leveraging the considerable benefits of Birmingham, the Innovation Birmingham Campus, and how this has immensely helped Synapse’s growth to date. He will cover experiences in hiring a great local team, raising UK Grants and loan finance, and selling to Blue Chips.

When & Where
Innovation Birmingham Campus
Innovation Birmingham Campus; The base for Birmingham’s tech community.
The Innovation Birmingham strategy is focused on a service offering for founders of new technology ventures, as well as more established tech businesses. The campus facilities include the Entrepreneurs for the Future (e4f) multi-occupancy start-up centre with hot-desking facilities and a wide range of flexible office units (115-15,000 sq ft). However, the campus is far from just bricks and mortar; the team actively nurtures an interactive and supportive community within the place.
