Description

Keynote Talk: Sumi Perera

Sri Lankan born, Sumi Perera is an interdisciplinary artist now based in London whose work draws on her training in medicine and scientific research. Producing work which is often interactive and collaborative, she generates multiple series from a given set of plates, producing artists’ books, book works and installations by combining hybrid printmaking techniques (etching, aquatint, drypoint, monoprint, chine-collé, collagraph, mezzotint, lithography, kiln-fired screenprinted decals etc.) with stitch and Computer Numerical Controlled applications (laser-cutting/engraving, sandblasting etc.).

Perera was a participant in the recent rural touring exhibition Craft+Conflict (2018) curated by Karen Babayan in collaboration with Chris Taylor/PAGES in which herSubliminal Spaces installation emerges from a series of exquisite handmade prints, found objects and paper constructions. She says: “There are many underlying strands:Subliminal Spaces was a reflection of uncertainty but also of survival. The piece originated during the Grenfell tragedy, hence the visible marks of fire and scorching. It contains blue prints of a house we never built in Sri Lanka due to the civil war. Elements of my current house are also there, objects from my kitchen and garden.”

Perera received an MA Book Arts from Camberwell College (2004). She is a fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (council member), fellow of the Royal Society of Designer Craftsmen, Society of Graphic Fine Arts and 62 Group (Textile Artists) and has taught at CAFA (Central Academy of Fine Arts), Beijing.

Her work is held in many public collections including the Tate Britain, V&A Museum, Ashmolean, Oxford, Yale Centre for British Art (USA). She has won several international awards including: Prix de Print, USA (2015); Flourish Award - Printmaking (2015); Gold Medal - International Book Arts Competition, Seoul (2005); Birgit-Skiold Award for Excellence in Book Arts (2005); Shelter-USA (2008); SCU Award, Australia (2009); Incline Press Award (2015), and Laurence King Publishers Award (2015).
