Geoff McFarland, Group Engineering Director of Renishaw plc
Title: Robots, Sensors and Intelligent Fusion - Automation Regression Revolution?
Biography: Geoff graduated with a B. Eng. in Computer Aided Mechanical Engineering at Heriot-Watt University, where he subsequently worked for several years as a research associate. After working briefly in the high-volume manufacturing electronic sector, joined Renishaw in 1994 and was appointed to the main Board of Renishaw plc in 2002. He heads the group's engineering function which covers a wide range of products including industrial metrology, position encoders, additive manufacture, Raman spectroscopy and medical systems (dental and neurology) and is also responsible for group IP and patents.
Chris Smith, Electronics Manager – Robotics and Systems Engineering, Dyson Technology Ltd.
Biography: Chris leads a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers responsible for systems aspects of robotic products within Dyson. His responsibility spans system architecture, assessment and selection of navigation and autonomy algorithms, providing requirements for the implementation teams, system testing and deployment assessment. Chris’ team made major contributions to the 360 Eye automated vacuum cleaner announced in September 2014 by Dyson in Japan and Germany.
Before joining Dyson Chris was a Principal Scientist at BAE Systems providing technical expertise for a number of high profile and business critical robotics and autonomy projects including the Wildcat and Robovolc autonomous ground vehicle platforms.
Chris has a MEng degree in Electro-Mechanical Engineering from Southampton University.
