Event description

Description

In 2012, Manila theatre company Sipat Lawin and four Australian playwrights adapted Japanese novel Battle Royale into a site-specific performance.

Battalia Royale would break every attendance record for independent theatre in the Philippines, would attract a dedicated fan following of thousands of people and receive international coverage from news services such as Reuters, BBC, Al-Jazeera and CNN.

At the same time, the play would be under attack by the UN Subcommittee for Victims of Torture, claiming it was “merchandising brutality” - there would be a campaign to censor or ban the show led by the country’s leading university, drilling cast and creatives alike with the same question: ‘Has the kids-killing-kids craze gone too far?’

And has it? Was it reckless to produce a piece of glossy, hedonistic pulp-violence in a country impacted by an ongoing civil war?

Kids Killing Kids is a performance lecture exploring the Battalia Royaleproject, questions of cross-cultural collaboration, Filipino culture and the nature of onstage violence.

Presented by director JK Anicoche (Phil) and writer David Finnigan (Aus).
