About this event
This summer, Fenwick invites children on an unforgettable journey through the universe in partnership with Kielder Observatory.
Over the course of five exciting days, young explorers will discover a new space theme each day — from stars and planets to black holes and beyond. Each session includes interactive talks, hands-on science activities, and expert-led experiences designed to ignite curiosity and inspire a love of astronomy.
A space-themed packed lunch and snack boxes are included at each event, making it the perfect mix of learning and fun.
With small group sizes and a carefully curated programme, this is a unique opportunity for children to explore the wonders of the universe — Fenwick style.

Monday 28 July, 11:00am–12:00pm - Astronomy
Join astronomers from Kielder Observatory for a magical introduction to the night sky. Perfect for young stargazers and their families, this workshop will guide children through the basics of astronomy- exploring stars, constellations and the stories behind them. After discovering what lies beyond our world, each child will get to build their very own telescope to take home and continue their cosmic journey. A fun, hands-on session designed to spark curiosity and wonder about the universe.
Tuesday 29 July, 11:00am–12:00pm - The Solar System
Travel from Mercury to Neptune and discover the incredible diversity of worlds within our solar system. In this creative and educational session, children will explore the unique features of each planet, all brought to life through vivid storytelling and interactive discussion. The session concludes with an artistic activity - crafting a colourful hanging mobile of the solar system to take home and display. Ideal for curious minds who love space and making things!
Wednesday 30 July, 11:00am–12:00pm — Space Exploration
From the first moon landing to future missions to Mars, space exploration is one of humanity’s greatest adventures. This session takes children on a journey through the history and future of space travel, exploring rockets, astronauts, and landing capsules. With a strong hands-on focus, children will get involved with designing and creating their own spacecraft.
Thursday 31 July, 11:00am–12:00pm — The Sun
Dive into the science of the Sun in this illuminating workshop all about light, colour, and stars. Children will explore how the Sun produces light, what solar flares are, and how its these things affect our planet. Using diffraction glasses, UV-sensitive beads, and an infrared camera, they’ll see invisible parts of the spectrum and create light-reactive bracelets to take home. It’s a vibrant, visual session packed with fun experiments and fascinating facts about the star at the centre of our solar system.
Friday 1 August, 11:00am–12:00pm — Asteroids & Comets
Step into the world of cosmic collisions, icy comets and ancient asteroids in this hands-on workshop all about space rocks. Children will learn how these fascinating objects form, what they’re made of, and the vital clues they hold about the early solar system. The highlight of the session is a rare chance to handle real meteorites - including samples from the Moon and Mars - offering a tangible connection to worlds beyond our own. An unforgettable experience for curious young explorers.
