About this event

Fashion • Fashion
Last November, with Dr Saeko Yazaki shared her deep knowledge and love of kimono and this was followed by a photo exhibition and talk in March, telling some stories about how Orkney and Japan are connected through Kimono and other ties.

This time we are looking at Kimono in a different context, exploring how Japanese textiles and fashion met Europe, and what happened when they did.

We look forward to welcoming our distinguished speaker

Claire Wilcox is Professor in Fashion Curation at London College of Fashion, Visiting Scholar, Oxford Centre for Life-Writing and former Senior Curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum where she curated many exhibitions, most recently Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty (2015), Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up (2018) and Fashioning Masculinities: the Art of Menswear (2022), and also contributed to the KIMONO: Kyoto to Catwalk exhibition catalog (2020). She is the author of Patch Work: A Life Amongst Clothes (Bloomsbury) which won the 2021 PEN Ackerley Prize for memoir and autobiography.
