Event description

Description

This walking tour around the Kings Cross area compares locations from the marvellous 1955 film with what we see today.

In the second half of the 20th century nothing much changed, but since the start of the new millennium the area, especially between the stations, has evolved considerably – station platforms and canopies have been added, roads have been re-aligned, the gas holders have been dismantled and partially re-sited, shopping and art have replaced coal and grain. However, some of the nearby streets and junctions still look almost the same as in the movie.

Using film stills, maps and archive images we'll see how things have changed (or not). We'll visit Mrs Wilberforce's street and other locations used in the film. We'll trace the heist route through today's big brands up to the railway line to see where the film ended. We might even see a steam train if we are lucky. And we'll possibly be humming this music from the film along the way.

I have really enjoyed reseaching this one and I hope it shines through on the day.

The walk is approx 1.5miles long and lasts approx 2hrs. Please note that questions and discussions can often lengthen the tour.

Jane ParkerMy guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. I design and research every tour myself – in fact, the research never ends.
The walking tours I offer are all on subjects I am genuinely interested in – each highlights a different facet of my personality. I am specifically interested in the changing face of our streets over time and how those changes have affected local communities and the social history of an area.
