Event description
Find out about the brands and businesses depicted in the old hand-painted signage that still clings to the walls above this busy junction

About this event

Let's hunt out some old ghosts near Kings Cross Station...

But not the spooky kind – on this tour we will be investigating ghosted or faded signs of the past, these days commonly referred to as ghostsigns – outdated advertisements or company branding that can still be seen above today's streets.

Before the introduction of back-lit perspex and interactive screens, the way to advertise a product or service was to paint it large on a wall. These unique advertisements of old were created by specialist artisans, commissioned either by well-known companies to sell their branded products or by local businessmen keen to attract passing trade.

The Kings Cross area, one of London's major transport hubs, used to be absolutely slathered with paint and large letters advertising all sorts of products and businesses and some marvellous examples still remain, clinging to the brickwork above today's busy streets. Hear about the businesses, brands and people – find out about innovative inventions, bogus potions and bygone products, as well as big names that are still going strong today.

This almost circular walk starts and finishes a stone's throw from Kings Cross Station. It is just over a mile long and lasts just short of two hours.

Some of the signs on this route are also featured in my online talks about ghostsigns which are available via Zoom here.

My guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. I design and research every tour myself – in fact, the research never ends. The walking tours I offer are all on subjects I am genuinely interested in – each highlights a different facet of my personality. I am specifically interested in the changing face of our streets over time and how those changes have affected local communities and the social history of an area.

FAQs

What special requirements do I need to be aware of during Covid-19?

This is easier explained within a specific section on my website here.

Where exactly does this tour start?

Details of the specific meeting point will be on your ticket which will be sent via email.

Minimum age requirements to enter the event?

There is no minimum age – children aged 5 or younger are welcome at no charge. However, please note that all other children up to age 15 must be accompanied by an adult – one child per paying adult.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Please don't waste time and resources printing out your ticket.I will have a list of attendees on the day, although it would be wise to make a note of your booking reference

Is my registration fee or ticket transferable?

As you can appreciate, transfers/reassignments do not apply to those who just do not show up.

However, in cases of illness or unforeseen circumstances I will be happy to transfer your booking to another of my walks on another date as long as you let me know at least 24 hours before your booked walk is due to start.

Alternatively ...  perhaps you might be able to offer your ticket to a friend ... please see the next question...

Is it OK if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

This is fine – just email/text me the name of the person who will be taking your place.

Is this tour suitable for wheelchairs?

The walk will be mostly on standard pavements and should not pose any problems further to those experienced on an average high street.
