About this event
Spasticity is a frequent syndrome affecting patients with long term neurological conditions affecting their brain or spinal cord.
It can impact in different ways on patients quality of life and if left untreated it can lead to serious complications such as infection, pressure sores as well as chronic pain and discomfort. This can lead to hospital admissions which could be prevented with appropriate management.
Spasticity can and should be managed by experienced neurorehabilitation MDTs able to offer comprehensive assessments and holistic approach including physical therapy, timely and specialist medical interventions and sometimes surgical treatments integrating with patient self-management (requiring carers support) and community services devising a proper 24/7 plan
The Neurorehabilitation service at King's College Hospital have developed a very experienced and skilled Spasticity Multidisciplinary Team supporting patients within the Region across different pathways at inpatient and outpatient level, able to offer and guide on a comprehensive and highly specialised spasticity management, also in liaison with and supporting other more local services.
The Spasticity Masterclass organised at King's College Hospital aims to educate the wider Trust and local services within the Region on the Spasticity Service offer for improving referral pathway and ongoing management as well as to inspire development of more local spasticity services within the hub and spoke model as well as share practice with other established Spasticity services within the London area. This is in the context of extremely high demand, unmet by current services provision, with a likely amount of unknown need .
