Event description

Description

The King’s Theatre opened on 8th December 1906 and is one of Scotland’s oldest theatres. It is also the only surviving operational Edwardian theatre by the architects Swanston and Davidson. The Grade A listed building has been described by the Theatres Trust as ‘a space of operatic magnificence, a glorious extravaganza of lush Viennese Baroque’ with beautiful examples of Edwardian stained glass. Its domed ceiling is the largest piece of public art work designed and painted by the artist John Bryne.

We will provide hour long building tours throughout the day (10:30am, 12:30pm, 2:30pm) that will highlight the history and heritage of our building and showcase the theatre’s connections with a host of global entertainers, including Anna Pavlova, Dame Margot Fontaine, Maria Callas, Juliette Binoche and Dame Maggie Smith.

We will offer short, 30 minute intergenerational dance workshops (11:30am and 1:30pm) where young people can join in with their grown ups to learn dances from across the globe and 30 minute musical storytelling workshops (12 noon and 2:00pm) where people of all ages can join in storytelling and song in multiple languages.

Finally, the Edinburgh Gang Show will do a lunchtime performance. The King’s Theatre have a long standing association with the Edinburgh gang Show and we are delighted to welcome them back to the theatre for Doors Open Day!
