Event description
Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the worlds most inland seabird colony on Wild Intrigue's popular Kittiwakes & Doughnut Safari.

About this Event

After spending half of the year out at sea, the Tyne Kittiwakes return to nest on the buildings and bridges of Newcastle and Gateshead Quayside, their calls a wild backdrop to a lively hub of restaurants, galleries, hotels and pubs.

Wild Intrigue have teamed up with the Tyne Kittiwake Partnership, to provide a fascinating talk and Proven Goods Co. to supply delicious local doughnuts.

You will first set off on a leisurely hour long circular walk from BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, where the Kittiwakes are welcomed back to nest on the iconic building by BALTIC each year. From there you will be guided along the quayside, where Wild Intrigue will share the fascinating story of the Tyne Kittiwakes. With a picture-perfect, world-famous backdrop of the Tyne, you will have the opportunity to observe these beautiful birds up close.

Afterwards, local ornithologist Dan Turner from the Tyne Kittiwake Partnership will share the intriguing ecology of the lives of the Tyne Kittiwakes in a fascinating illustrated talk. Before settling in to enjoy the talk, you can choose an irresistible, handcrafted doughnut by artisan, Newcastle based Proven Goods Co. to enjoy with a brew.

A percentage of profits from Wild Intrigue’s 2021 Kittiwakes & Doughnut Safaris will be donated to BALTIC’s Care for Our Kittiwakes campaign. This helps to pay for the maintenance of vital Kittiwake nesting habitat on BALTIC, which costs BALTIC on average £50 per Kittiwake, every year! The Kittiwakes are an intriguing and important addition to the gallery’s architecture and the city's heritage, so Wild Intrigue are proud to support BALTIC in this campaign.

FAQs

What about COVID security?

By summer 2021, much of the outdoor tourism industry is expected to return to a more 'normal' system. With this in mind, Wild Intrigue events are planned with a 'glass half full' view that events can go ahead.

In 2020, Wild Intrigue gained Good to Go accreditation from Visit England for putting measures in place to allow events to go ahead in a COVID-secure way, and in line with the most up-to-date government guidance. The safety of attendees is top priority for Wild Intrigue, so if necessary, events can be adapted to conform with government guidance at the time, or full refunds will be given if events need to be cancelled.

Summer 2021 is looking optimistic - bright, sunny and happy - so grab a ticket and look forward to the mini adventure.

Why doughnuts?

Why not! Newcastle and Gateshead are hubs of small, passionate, independent businesses – like us. As a social enterprise we strive to support communities through our events, so we’re linking with local artisan doughnut pro's Proven Goods Co. who will provide a handmade treat for us at the end of the walk. Proven Goods Co. use local, organic produce in their baked goodies as much as possible - how great is that?

Who can book onto the Kittiwakes & Doughnut Safari?

Wild Intrigue encourages everyone to discover how wonderful Tyne Kittiwakes! Whether you're a visitor to the North East, a local family, an ornithologist.. this Mini Exped has been created for anyone with an intrigue for Kittiwakes, and a taste for doughnuts, to enjoy.
