Course Description

Knowing when it is safe for an athlete to be discharged from rehabilitation following trauma and surgery and return to competing in multi-directional agility-focused sports such as football, rugby, and netball can be a difficult task. Furthermore, knowing what advice to give athletes after rehabilitation and return-to-sport to prevent knee re-injury can be an even more difficult task. Different clinical and functional tests measure different characteristics of knee functional joint stability and an athlete’s overall physiological, physical, and psychoemotional status. Knowledge of which types of test (e.g. clinical, functional, psychoemotional) yield the most valuable data for the return-to-sport decision-making process is important to safely discharge an athlete from rehabilitation and prevent re-injury.

The purpose of this highly-practical course is to present you with the most important theoretical and evidence-informed concepts and practical techniques in knee return-to-sport testing and re-injury prevention following trauma and surgery. As you participate in this course, you’ll see the most up-to-date published and unpublished laboratory and clinical research from the international scientific community. You’ll hear how to design and apply a battery of evidence-based clinical, functional, and psychoemotional tests for post-injury and post-surgery outcome measurement of the knee and informed return-to-sport decision-making. You’ll also get to walk through and practice all the tests on multiple occasions so that you get a firm grasp of correct test techniques for generating reliable and valid data. At the end of this course you’ll be able to design and perform a battery of evidence-informed tests in a way that enables you to confidently make return-to-sport and re-injury prevention recommendations to athletes, sports physicians, surgeons, coaches, and team managers. Past course delegates have included clinicians from the British National Health Service (NHS), private practice, professional rugby union, professional football, elite netball, the British Army, and the Royal Navy. Course content is aligned with multiple Sports Physiotherapist core competencies listed by the International Federation of Sports Physical Therapy (IFSPT). The course is a British Association of Sports Rehabilitators and Trainers (BASRaT) Approved Continuing Professional Development Course.
