Knights of the Raj
"Knights of the Raj" refers to an arts project and short film that explores the history of Bangladeshi-owned Indian restaurants in the UK. It tells the story of the curry phenomenon and the contributions of the immigrant generation who established these eateries. Knights of the Raj focuses on the cultural significance and struggles of the Bangladeshi community who established the curry houses that have become a staple in British society. The project is a signature work of Birmingham based Mohammed Ali, whose own background includes working in his father's restaurant, and who aims to give voice to this often-overlooked history.
The Brick Lane mural titled "Mateer Tan" (The Land is Calling) by Mohammed Ali MBE is located at 14 Brick Lane, a prominent wall on the corner next to Hopetown Street, near the Banglatown Arch.
