Knit New Lanark - SCOTLAND IN SIX
Tue 18 April 2017, 10:00 – 16:00 BST
Yarnbombers and guerrilla knitters will descend on New Lanark to yarnbomb the traditional social hub of the village – the Institute! Experts, beginners and those who are simply wool-curious are invited to drop in throughout the day to enjoy the World Heritage Day festivities as part of the wider Scotland in Six celebrations.
Throughout the course of the day, we’ll add more and more to the yarnbomb site, creating a very different view of this iconic venue. A variety of free activities will also take place on the day, with complimentary treats kindly provided by Border Biscuits.
Colours of Scotland – Natural Dyeing with Ann Ross
- Why Plant Dyes? To follow an ancient tradition, to explore your environment, to enjoy experimenting and discovering, to satisfy your creativity and to understand the lifestyles of the people.
- Ann has been experimenting with plant dyes for over 20 years. She enjoys researching, exploring, identifying my finds. She is influenced by the physicality of my surroundings, the ever changing colour palette of the Scottish landscape. It gives her great pleasure to collect plants, extract colour and achieve the very colours of our landscape from which they came.
Spinning with Bex
- Come and try your hand at a drop of spinning! Don't worry, there are no bikes here - just wool. Self-taught woolly worker Bex will talk you through her journey “from sheep to shawl”, from cleaning raw fleece to dying and weaving a final product. You will have a chance to try different kinds of spinning and help create a special skein of yarn for the day.
- Kids, adults and big kids all welcome. Please do not leave children unattended.
Participants of all ages can either knit in advance and bring their creations, or use the colourful New Lanark woollen yarn which will be provided at the venue.
We will be running a free shuttle bus from the train station to the venue and back again. Just look for the pink Dig It! 2017 sign in the bus window.
In the run up to the event, New Lanark will also running a range of World Heritage Day activities, including a “Scanathon” and archaeological dig.
Please note that photographs will taken during the event. If you would not like to be photographed, please speak to a member of staff.
