Talk Title: Physics and mathematics of knots
Abstract: Knots have always been regarded as fascinating objects. They have various real-life applications and play important role in science and art. A branch of mathematics called knot theory aims to characterize their properties and classify all knots. In the last three decades it turned out, that knot theory is also intimately related to modern theories in physics, such as quantum field theory and string theory. Such connections further inspired and pushed forward the research in knot theory, and also constitute a beautiful example of the unity of contemporary physics and mathematics. In this talk, I will discuss such connections between these two disciplines, and present some modern, interdisciplinary applications of knots.

Talk Title: Quantum interference enables constant-time quantum information processing
Abstract: It is an open question how fast information processing can be performed and whether quantum effects can speed up the best existing solutions. Signal extraction, analysis and compression in diagnostics, astronomy, chemistry and broadcasting builds on the discrete Fourier transform. It is implemented with the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm that assumes a periodic input of specific lengths, which rarely holds true. A less-known transform, the Kravchuk–Fourier (KT), allows one to operate on finite strings of arbitrary length. It is of high demand in digital image processing and computer vision, but features a prohibitive runtime. Here, we report a one-step computation of a fractional quantum KT. A quantum d-nary (qudit) architecture we use comprises only one gate and offers processing time independent of the input size. The gate may employ a multiphoton Hong–Ou– Mandel effect. Existing quantum technologies may scale it up towards diverse applications.

We run FREE events which take the form of evening science seminars Each event is centred a different scientific discipline and takes place in a different location in the UK. We link with local universities via our collaboration with student societies. Each event welcomes renowned scientists who talk about their research. These sessions aim to provide a platform for scientific discussions, networking, exploration of possible scientific careers and establishment of collaborations. Each event treats its guests with a buffet and a drinks reception for an opportunity to network!
