Uncovering the Stories in Our Place Names
Ever wondered what the names of local towns, fields, and landmarks really mean? Join us at Friels Bar and Restaurant, Swatragh on Thursday, 13th November from 7pm–8pm for an engaging talk exploring the deep connections between our modern Irish place names and their origins in the Irish language.
Presented by Dr. Séamas Ó Donnghaile on behalf of CCÉ, An Suaitreach, Swatragh Comhaltas, this event reveals how the Irish language preserves clues about the landscape, history, and traditions that shaped our community. Many names we use daily have ancient roots describing hills, rivers, clearings, churches, or even local legends. Through these words, we uncover how our ancestors saw and understood the land around them.
Discover:
- How Swatragh and Laragh got their names
- What a Tamlaght or Tamney really means
- Why Gortanure is linked to a particular tree
- How the Irish language continues to shape our sense of place
The talk includes a Q&A session—an opportunity to explore your own local names and their meanings.
Bonus: Free entry to Gorta Swatragh’s Famine Story from 3pm to 7pm before the event.
All are welcome to this evening of learning and local heritage at Friels.
