Event description

Description

Join the Everyday Muslim Heritage and Archive Initiative for a special afternoon workshop at the Poetry Society in Covent Garden with filmmaker, lecturer and writer Imruh Bakari. Following on from feedback we received from our symposium 'An Exploration of Black British Muslim Heritage and History' in March this year, Imruh will be giving two presentations focusing on the importance of archiving and how the past has an influence on our present:

Beyond Google: Learning how to learn

This presentation will look at the avenues in which to foster the notion of discovering and ‘learning’ about history and heritage through more traditional research methods (e.g searching archives) and their advantages compared to reliance on the internet. It will focus on discovering the material already existing within archives and the importance of bringing to the fore the stories that are ‘lost’ or subverted. It will also look at the notion of an archive and stress the importance of creating and maintaining an archive as an invaluable legacy to community and societal history and heritage.

Why Our History is Our Present: An Intergenerational Perspective

This presentation will look at how history affects our present. It will focus on Muslim history and heritage, drawing in the wider socio-political context and examining it through an intergenerational lens.

These presentations will be followed by discussions involving attendees. The endeavour is that this workshop will act as a means from which you become the catalyst to propagate the ideas discussed and debated on the day. Thus the afternoon will end with a discussion session entitled “Where Do We Go From Here?” where practical steps and ideas can be formulated to ensure African, Afro-Caribbean, and Black community voices are heard within the heritage sector. This session will feed into our ongoing consultation with members from the diverse Muslim communities in the UK entitled “What Matters?”, which aims to create a cohesive manifesto as a reference for those interested in ensuring that British Muslim heritage is included in wider British heritage.
