Symposium and Book Launch
This is the second Subject Specialism Research Group symposium launching UCL Press' new open access book series Knowledge and the Curriculum. This event launches the open access edited collection Knowing History in Schools: Powerful knowledge and the powers of knowledge.
Knowing History in Schools is a dialogue between the sociologist of the curriculum Professor Michael Young and history educators about the aims, the form and the content of the school history curriculum. The book launch symposium seeks to continue the dialogues that the book began.
The launch-symposium will be in three parts.
- In part one, Dr Arthur Chapman (UCL), the book's editor, will introduce Knowing History in Schools t and three contributors to the book - Professor Michael Young (UCL), Dr Alison Kitson (UCL), and Dr Nick Dennis (St Francis' College) - will make brief presentations, drawing on their contributions to the book.
- In part two, three readers of the book - Professor Philippe Vitale (Aix-Marseille Université), Professor Johan Mueller (University of Cape Town) and Professor Terry Haydn (University of East Anglia) - will respond to it from differing perspectives.
- In part three, Dr Arthur Chapman will chair a discussion of the book's arguments, by directing attendee questions, posted through 'chat,' to members of the panel.
The seminar is open to all and free to attend. The seminar will take place via Zoom. A link to the event will be sent to attendees prior to the event.
