Description

Knowledge exchange event: Improving self-management of type 2 diabetes for people with severe mental illness.

You are invited to a special event hosted by the School of Health Sciences at City, University of London to exchange and explore ideas around improving self-management and outcomes for people with severe mental illness and type-2 diabetes mellitus. This event is free to attend.

What’s this all about?

People with severe mental illnesses (SMI) such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder experience health inequalities, among which is a twofold increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) compared with the general population. Prevalence of diabetes in people with SMI is approximately 12%. Acute diabetes complications and mortality are greater in people who also have SMI, whilst the health-related quality of life of people with SMI is poorer in those who also have diabetes.

Over the last 3 years, a team of health researchers led by Professor Alan Simpson at the School of Health Sciences, City, University of London, have worked alongside clinicians and service users on several research studies*, investigating the barriers and facilitators to improving self-management in people with severe mental Illness (SMI) and type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

We will be hosting a special Knowledge Exchange Event to present the results of our work to date and to discuss the implications for practice and future research with a range of service managers, clinicians, service users, carers and educationalists. We hope you and/or colleagues will attend.

We intend that the event will be informative and thought-provoking for service providers and service users whilst providing an opportunity for participants to contribute their views and ideas to the future development of our research in this important area.
