Knowledge Integration Processes in Translational Research: The Case of the Premature Birth Center

Translational research is applauded for its potential to move knowledge gained from the basic sciences to its application in clinical settings. Academic institutions, governments, and funders are interested in investing in such research initiatives. Yet, it has been shown that this type of collaborative research entails unique challenges. This presentation sheds light on those challenges by describing the formation of a new translational research center at Stanford University School of Medicine seeking to uncover the causes of premature birth.

Elina Mäkinen (Ph.D.) is an organizational sociologist specializing in collaboration and innovation in the life sciences. She received her Ph.D. from Stanford University’s organization studies doctoral program and is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Faculty of Management in University of Tampere, Finland.
