Description

Managing Relationships - Diplomacy for Non-Diplomats

In partnership with Civil Service Local and the Scottish Government

This workshop is led by David Barnes, National Advisor on Agriculture Policy, Scottish Government. David has a wealth of experience in EU negotiations and has played leading roles in agreeing the UK's Common Agricultural Policy programmes with the EU. As Agriculture Attache with the British Embassy in Paris he secured the lifting of France’s ban on imports of UK beef following the BSE crisis.

Using real-life examples from both UK and overseas postings, David will share insights into some of the challenges of international negotiations and inter-governmental relations - and crucially, the approaches taken and outcomes achieved. You will gain insight into the environment of international policy work, and be offered a set of techniques for successfully influencing important partners in any relationship management setting, without burning bridges with the ‘home team’.

The session will cover international influencing and negotiating; managing relationships successfully whilst resolving disagreements; and some techniques to consider and pitfalls to avoid.

This workshop is designed for senior managers (G6/7s) and Fast Streamers looking to understand the challenges and opportunities of working on international negotiations, directly or indirectly, and influencing international partners. Although the session is set against a background of international relations, the techniques covered also have clear application in other relationship management environments such as intra-UK or government-stakeholder.

As with all Knowledge Series workshops, you can expect to:

  • Learn from the real experiences, insights and achievements of those who have actually worked on a project, a problem area or in a particular situation;

  • Learn from your fellow delegates and gain the benefit of their different viewpoints;

  • Make new contacts in other departments and administrations and grow your professional network.

NOTE: please register using your work email address only - do not use personal email addresses.
