Description

Krakow & Auschwitz Photography Workshop

Workshop Dates: Friday 7th to Sunday 9th December 2018

Cost: £227 per photographer. Non-photographer partners welcome for only £77 (to cover Auschwitz trip)

This will be our second visit to Krakow in Poland. A mix of historic buildings, interesting history, Christmas Markets with amazing street food and the infamous Auschwitz camps all make for an amazing weekend photography trip.

The city itself survived pretty much intact in WWII and today is a beautiful and vibrant city alongside cold war architecture. The site at Auschwitz has a painful past which can be difficult to photograph, but the locals want visitors to come and they want visitors to respectfully photograph and tell the world what happened there.

This is a unique photographic experience in one of Europe's most fascinating cities. Over three days we will be exploring the varied streets of Krakow as well as visiting the two sites at Auschwitz on the second day. This is a vibrant city with fantastic architecture as well as a remarkable history.

It's December. Its Christmas. Poland is famed for its Christmas markets and in the main square you can expect various Christmas celebrations and many stalls selling local foods and seasonal goods.

Krakow is fairly cheap compared to the UK, so expect eating out to cost around half you would spend in the UK. Accomodation in hotels is also cheaper than the UK, many of us tend to stay in Airbnb places where you can book a good quality entire central apartment for around £26 per night.

Flights are easily available from numerous UK and European airports at low prices so book as soon as possible to get the best prices. Ryanair currently (Sept 2018) has flights from £46 return!

Provisional Programme

Our workshops are flexible and relaxed, a time to learn, explore and create the best shots. The following is a provisional programme and is subject to change:

Day one - Friday 7th Dec - Krakow

Afternoon: Photo Walk around the UNESCO listed Rynek Glowny main square which is a sprawling medieval plaza (the largest of its kind in all of Europe), 15th-century Cloth Hall, 14th-century Gothic St Mary’s Basilica and Medieval centre. Every hour of the day a trumpeter appears at a window in the Basilica and plays a few traditional songs.

Evening: If there is demand we will go out in the evening for some night photography. The main square is beautifully lit in the evening. Tripods are essential.

Day Two - Saturday 8th Dec - Auschwitz

Trip to Auschwitz taking in the original smaller Auschwitz I camp and then travelling about 3km to the larger Auschwitz II also known as Birkenau. Photographing Auschwitz can be emotional and difficult and there are some areas which you are respectfully asked not to photograph. Both sites offer many opportunities for unusual photography which the local guides encourage, and through our photography, help to educate the world what happened here. The cost of this day trip, transport and the Auschwitz guide is included in your workshop fee. Food is not included. This is approx 1.5 hour drive each way.

Our last trip to Auschwitz was also in the winter and this gave the sites a stark atmosphere and is somehow very fitting for the subject.

Day Three - Sunday 9th Dec - Krakow

Morning: Jewish Quarter: Visit the enthralling Old Synagogue and the haunting Jewish Cemetery, then wander the cobbled lanes looking for photo opportunities.

Afternoon: Photo walk to the Schindler Factory Museum (located in his original factory) and museum visit**. The museum is a multimedia masterpiece telling the story of Oscar Schindler (whose story became well known due to the film Schindler's List) with many unique photo opportunities.
**The entry cost of the museum is not included in your workshop fee and costs approx. £5 per person.

We finish the workshop around 3pm to allow those with afternoon or evening flights time to travel.

A full detailed programme will be emailed to participants in the weeks before the workshop.

Evenings

We know that photography can sometimes be a solitary hobby or interest. We try to make our workshops a social and friendly event as well. Each evening there will the option to meet socially for drinks and/or dinner. This is not mandatory and you are free to do your own thing.

What will you learn? What will we focus on?

Firstly our workshops are aimed at photographers of all abilities. You are very welcome if you are a beginner with limited knowledge or a professional looking to expand your portfolio. Our workshops are hands-on and our aim is to help you take and create better photos. Over the weekend we will focus on people and street photography, architecture, and land/cityscape. Helping you to learn to see more and identify more photo opportunities. Helping you to use the different functions on your camera and get you away from auto or program mode. Using the different settings on your camera to best effect and to create better photos. Using different lenses for different effects (if you have more than one)

Who is your group leader?

Steven Gosling. I am an award winning and published photographer with over 25 years experience and my own work focuses on landscape, architecture, travel, fashion and portrait, often combining different genres to create unique images. I have been leading photography workshops for several years including UK and international locations.

What’s Included in the trip?

Our events are structured for photographers of all abilities; We cater for everyone from the very experienced to those who are just learning about digital photography and want some tuition and help. Our aim is to improve your photography.

The cost of the day trip to Auschwitz and onsite guide is included in the trip cost.
