Want to make your very own ceramic mug? Get ready to learn the ancient Japanese ceramics technique, Kurinuki!
About this event
This August we’ll be hosting our second Kurinuki workshop hosted by Naomi Grace Ceramics at the lovely vintage interiors imporium, Whittle and Wolf.
What will the workshop include?
• You will receive a full tutorial and guidance of how to make your own mug using the ancient Japanese ceramics technique: Kurinuki.
• You will learn the basic principles of how ceramics are made.
• You will make your own mug that will be taken away and glazed by Naomi that you will collect 2 weeks later when it’s completed.
What is Kurinuki?
Kurinuki is an ancient Japanese ceramics technique that can be used to create many objects but we will be using it to create mugs. This wonderful technique involves hollowing out a block of clay and then carving away the outside to create the shape of a mug. The idea of these mugs is that they are completely unique and their beauty lies in their imperfections.
Unlike more commonly known pottery techniques for making mugs such as throwing, Kurinuki is a technique that is suitable for beginners and doesn’t require any special equipment, anyone can do it!
You will create your mug in the 2 hour workshop under Naomi’s guidance, then Naomi will take it away to be bisque fired, glazed and fired again (Naomi will explain the process clay goes through to become ceramic during the workshop). You will get to choose between 3 glazes for your mug.
You will then come and collect your very own handmade mug 2 weeks later.
Places are limited so we recommend booking as soon as you can to avoid disappointment.
