Are you ready to explore more movement on wheels? Maybe you've seen people dancing and realised it's trickier than it looks?
Join us in our cosy studio to explore some key fundamental movements on roller skates and learn how to develop these into satisfying rhythmic combinations. We have been offering roller dance classes for almost 10 years and have a system to secure your understanding and technique.
What if you're not a dancer?
Don't worry! We founded the Awkwards Dance Club at The Skate Sanctuary, with t-shirts to match! We know that moving your body feels great, we don't really care what it looks like - so bring your goofiest self and enjoy flailing on skates!
Pre-requisite skills:
You should be confident to stand still on the spot, and be able to control your speed with lemons.
You should be able to roll forwards and backwards
You should know how to fall safely
This class is not suggested for brand new roller skaters (Level 1), unless you already have a background in movement. If you are unsure, please contact us first.
We recommend you wear whatever safety gear you need to feel safe. There is no need to remove toe stops unless you want to. We can support you with this if you would like to try. We also have our wheel library available if you want to try different wheels. Please allow time to test and change these - we suggest you arrive 45-60 minutes earlier.
Why do we love roller dance so much?
It fosters a sense of belonging when folks are able to dance together. Roller dance is incredibly powerful and we have had the privilege of being in spaces where skaters don't speak the same language, but are able to join in with the same steps in dance.
- It supports fantastic footwork and technique that will support all other forms of roller skating. Especially balance.
- It doesn't require a lot of room, so you can practise in a smaller space - like The Skate Sanctuary!
- It's great fun.
- It's a fabulous warm up
- You will become a more confident skater and learn to be more patient with yourself.
