Event description

Description

LACAN’S ENGLISH/LA LANGUE ANGLAISE DE LACAN

Jacques Lacan was particularly interested in the English language to the point of speaking of lalanglaise.
His relationship with English was however ambivalent: keenly interested in English-speaking authors
(artists, psychoanalysts and philosophers) he nonetheless held that the English language maintains
a resistance to the unconscious. Does this mean that there is a spirit, a distinctive character of the
language, potentially refractory to the unconscious? The question raises the long-standing debate on
language and the unconscious, a veritable dividing line for psychoanalysts since the colloquium of
Bonneval (1960). Can the interrogation go so far as to distinguish a specific relation to the unconscious
for each language? If so, are there repercussions on the technique and on psychoanalysis in extension?
The work of translation in psychoanalysis reveals the difficulties, indeed the impossibilities inherent in
the passage from one language to another. But at the place of this loss, in the gap between languages,
unexpected and original effects of signification can also surface. Lacan’s use of certain English terms
bears witness to this.

This one-day fully bilingual event organised by the Paris-based Association de psychanalyse Encore, will explore these questions. All papers will be presented in both French and English and there will be discussion workshops, each with its own interpreters.
