About this event
SALON PSYCHANALYTIQUE:The Effectiveness of Psychoanalysis
Dr Luis Izcovich, Tamara Dellutri, MA LLM, and Holly Eloise Foy Roberts (Chair)
A variety of therapeutic proposals are available to treat the subject’s discontent. What is the proposition of psychoanalysis, and what is its effectiveness?
Approaching such a question in the era of service-based therapeutics involves the recognition of psychoanalysis' specificity: what are the distinct features of a clinic in transference, one that relies on speech to ‘touch’ the subject’s traumatism and how does the analyst accounts for its effects without identifying themselves with guarantees of proficiency?
Psychoanalysis is a praxis between two bodies: the analyst and the analysand, one that relies on the dispositive of the transference and is sustained by the analyst's desire and their act. How can we think of the effectiveness of psychoanalysis when acknowledging the idea of the unconscious involves recognising a limit in knowledge and thus, the impossibility of securing the outcomes and therapeutic guarantees demanded by the master discourse of the time?
Despite psychoanalysis’s unusual modality of intervention, the Freudian discovery has developed and extended around the globe, with real influence in clinical settings including the treatments of mental health in institutions.
This leads us to ask what keeps psychoanalysis an active and compelling therapeutic praxis for the XXI century and what affects its reception? Following Jacques Lacan’s development of Freud’s ideas, this event will examine the effectiveness of psychoanalysis.
