About this event
'The Great Ladies of Jazz with Sarah Oshlag
Sara Oshlag celebrates the giants of jazz singing, from Billie to Ella, from Peggy Lee to Julie London, from Nina to Sarah Vaughan. A night of swinging jazz and classic songs accompanied by the Alex Webb trio.
Sara Oschlag
Copenhagen-born vocalist Sara Oschlag grew up in a musical household, where her first jazz idol was Anita O’Day. Now based in Brighton, she has attracted rave reviews from the south coast jazz scene - Jazzwise editor Jon Newey said, ‘her stylish, imaginative phrasing and insouciant verve blew everyone away’ and Sussex Jazz Mag said her 2014 release ‘My Little Boat’ was ‘an album that you can listen to over and over again.’ The doyenne of British jazz singers, Claire Martin, has praised her ‘natural musician's ear and beautiful sense of swing.’
Since turning professional 2003, Sara has performed all over the UK as well as in Europe and America. Her influences now include Shirley Horn, Betty Carter, Carmen McRae, Sarah Vaughan and Eddie Jefferson. ‘She displays a maturity beyond her years, taking the listener on a journey, breathing new life into the old standards’ – Jim Mullen (multi award-winning guitarist).
Alex Webb
Alex Webb is a songwriter, arranger and pianist. His songs have been recorded by jazz singers China Moses, Mina Agossi, Sandra Nkake, Liane Carroll, Allan Harris, Alexia Gardner and Alexander Stewart, among others. His show ‘Cafe Society Swing’ has enjoyed several theatre runs in London and one in New York, where he received the New York Times ‘Critic’s Pick’.
“Here is a writer not content with peddling jazz covers but a composer hell-bent on writing some new jazz standards” – Blues & Soul
