Event description
Lady Anne in the Westmorland Dales, a theatrical performance in two parts

About this Event

To celebrate Westmorland Dales Day, Lady Anne Clifford visits Kirkby Stephen for the very first time, journeying from Pendragon Castle, Mallerstang.

Take a Cumbria Classic Coach from Market Square, Kirkby Stephen to Pendragon Castle, Mallerstang, to see Lady Anne and her gentlewomen catch up with the local news from her relations, Lord and Lady Wharton. She’s delighted to be back in the area she loves and eager to share her plans for restoring the Castle.

Returning on the bus to join the festivities in Kirkby Stephen, where Lady Anne will mingle with the crowds. She’ll sample local produce and chat with stallholders and craftspeople, picking up the odd gift and distributing money to the children. Impressed with its shops, flags and ambience, she’ll take to the stage in Church Green to thank the town for the warmth of its welcome and toast the proud future of the Westmorland Dales.

This two part promenade performance at Kirkby Stephen’s Westmorland Dales Day on 28 July 2019 will celebrate the remarkable life of Lady Anne Clifford. The brainwave of local resident Sue Capel, the play will be devised, written and performed by professional actor and director Lisa O’Hanlon, aided and abetted by members of the Lune Spring players and musician Carolyn Francis.

The first part of the play will be performed at Pendragon Castle by kind permission of the owner, John Bucknall. Tickets are limited to an audience of 50. The second part will take place on Kirkby Stephen’s Church Green, and will be non-ticketed and open to all.

Westmorland Dales Day is now in its fourth successful year. This is the first time drama will feature on the programme.
