Event description

Description

Discover Coventry's 1st Cathedral ruins founded on the site of the Bendictine Priory of St Mary founded by Lady Godiva (Godgifu) & Leofric, Earl of Mercia circa 1020/1030AD.

In 1999 Channel 4's Time Team were invited to Coventry to uncover Priory Gardens. During the excavations they discovered the lost remains of the Cathedral of St Mary the Virgin, a Benedictine Priory that had been founded by Godiva and Leofric. In 1046 it became consecrated ground and in 1102 it became the cities 1st Cathedral.

The discovery by the Channel 4 Time Team led to a further 22 months of excavations in which we uncoverd the gardens, the cloisters, the chapterhouse where English Parliament was held in 1404, 1423, 1459 & 1461 and the Undercrofts which prompted them to make a special return to the city for a second programme.

Paintings from the chapterhouse wall (circa 1300-1339) were recovered and are now exhibited within the Priory Visitors Centre.

Our very own friar guides you through Coventry's medieval past and gives you an example of what life would of been like as a friar in Medieval Coventry before guiding you back into the visitors centre where we have a small cafe and gift shop.
