Event description

Description

For sheer scenic splendour, few places in England can measure up to the outlandishly beautiful Lake District, where Wordsworth, Coleridge and their Romantic compatriots famously sought their poetic muse in the 19th century. The landscape of the Lakes is as breathtaking as any you’ll find in Switzerland or the French Alps – a sweeping panorama of humpbacked mountains, razorblade crags and scree-covered hillsides, strewn with mountainous tarns and some of the largest natural lakes anywhere in England.

With such a wealth of natural riches, it’s hardly surprising that the Lake District is one of the country’s favourite places for savouring the great outdoors, but there’s much more to this region than fine views – it’s also packed with history and culture, from the abandoned slate mines around Honister and the ruined abbey of Furness to the literary landmarks of Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount, both former homes of one William Wordsworth.

What's included:

3 nights hostel accommodation (3-5 people rooms), 3 x light breakfast, 3x packed lunches, guided hike each day, admin fee.

Single/twin rooms are available.

Single room supplement cost £50, twin room supplement cost £25. If you would like to book it, please email us on admin@curiouskatsadventures.com

Price structure: Here at CKAC, we know how hard it can be to save money for that dream adventure, so that’s why we offer a deposit scheme on most of our trips. The idea is that you can pay an initial deposit for your chosen event or trip, in order to reserve your spot, but you are still left with the remainder of the payment, to pay at your own convenience, allowing you more time to save.

Once the deposit of £75 + paypal fees has been paid, and you are ready to pay the remainder of your payment, simply visit our website, using the link: http://katsadventures.com/events/event/lake-district-hiking-weekend-adventure-4/, and choose the ‘remainder’ option from the drop-down list, in order to make the payment. Simple.

Please be aware that the remainder should be paid no later than a month before your trip and can only be made in one full payment. The remainder payment will complete your trip or event payment and will secure your place.

Price doesn't include transport, dinners and drinks

Important! The final payments: have to be made three weeks before the trip the latest. Please put this date in your diary now as no reminders will be sent and if you have not paid by then you will be removed from the trip and your deposit will not be refunded. For instructions on how to make the payment and for the bank details please follow this link: http://www.meetup.com/Curious-Kat-Adventure-Club/pages/Bank_account/.

Food: Please note that while we can cater for vegetarians we are unable to cater for any complicated diets, so if your requirements are unusual or if you have sever allergies you will need to make sure you bring your own food.

Our mountain leader-Dean

I am a Lancashire lad, hailing from the once Victorian mill town of Blackburn. I was lucky enough as a child to be immersed in nature and the countryside, thanks to my rural dwelling relatives. My other passion as a youngster was bicycles and motorbikes, so no surprise that I became an Engineer upon leaving school. Eventually this career took me to Italy for three years, where I learnt many things, most of all how to live and not just work!
I now earn a living as on outdoor pursuits instructor and guide, with my speciality being Mountain Biking. I am based during the summer months in Cumbria, located conveniently between the two National Parks of the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. In the winter I like to go on holiday, funnily enough, in the mountains!

Plan of the trip (subject of change)

Day 1 (Friday)

Transfer to Lake District (not included)

Recommended train:

26 May London Euston 18:30- Windermere 21:32

We will be meeting you at the hostel.

After checking in we may have a quick drink but we will try to go to sleep early to make sure we are ready for the hike on Saturday.

Day 2 (Saturday)

Light breakfast at the hostel included.

You will have a choice of hikes - easy and difficult, as we have two leaders to take you out.

Ambleside to Grasmere via Rydal water

This is a rather pleasant, nicely varied, circular of both Grasmere and Rydal Water even with the unavoidable road walking. Part of the route is along the old Coffin road, so called as it was the route used to take the dead of Rydal to the church in Grasmere for burial. It also passes Dove Cottage which was the home of the Lakeland poet William Wordsworth from 1799 to 1808.

Day 3 ( Sunday)

Light breakfast at the hostel included.

A choice of two walks will again be available with different levels of difficulty.

Ambleside - Wansfell Pike via Stock Ghyll waterfalls

This is a popular and beautiful walk. It includes a good climb up to Wansfell Pike overlooking the town of Ambleside, with stunning views of the Coniston Fells, round to the Fairfield Horseshoe and Red Screes. The village of Troutbeck, and a walk back through Skelghyll woods, adds a finishing flourish.

Day 4 (Monday)

Light breakfast at the hostel included.

You will have to check out in the morning.

Scandale Horseshoe, 14km.

The route leaves Ambleside near the University and heads North towards Sweden Crag before hitting the summit of the day Low Pike at 508 meters above sea level. It is then on to High Pike at 656 metres above sea level before turning above Thack Bottom Edge and over Scandale Head.

Passing Bakestones Moss and Scandale Tarn the route drops to cross Scandale Pass and then climbs to the main summit of the day Red Screes at 776 meters above sea level. The return descent then begins above Raven Crag, over Snarker Moss and Snaker Pike before meeting Kirkstone Road.

FAQs

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

If you have any doubts, queries or would like to chat to anyone about the best options for you, please contact us via email on admin@curiouskatsadventures.com or phone: 0749 642 82 37. Our lines are open Monday to Friday 10 am - 6 pm and we will get back to you within 3 working days. Please note that messages sent through any other channels may not be picked up.

What's the refund policy?

As you know the group operates a no refund policy due to most of the costs having to be paid in advance. However we understand that sometimes things come up and there is nothing you can do, you just have to cancel.

In this case we would be happy to allow you to sell your place to one of your friends. No direct swaps will be accepted though, so your friend needs to buy the place directly from us and only then we will process a refund to you. No one will be admitted on the trip, unless they pay directly to us.

To make sure we know that the swap will be taking place please email us before your friend signs up and let us know their name and when they will be making the payment. Please include the information about the trip as with over 60 upcoming events and almost 8,000 members we are getting hundreds of emails per day, so we need the correct information to identify it.

Please note that if you forget to let us know before your friend signs up, the swap will be invalid and will be treated as any other sale. Once the payment is done by them, please email us the details of original transaction (so that it can be found in the bank account/paypal account) and where should we be sending refund to.

Admin fee of 10% (minimum £3.50) applies to all refunds. Paypal fees are non refundable. The refund will be processed within 5 working days of the trip the latest.
