About this Event

AGM and Presidential Address - The Long History of Conservation

Gillian Tindall, LAMAS President

The LAMAS AGM will start at 6 PM, and it will be followed by a lecture from Gillian Tindall.

We are inclined to date concern for historic buildings from the time of Ashbee and Morris, but an interest in `relics' was already developing two centuries earlier in the wake of Cromwellian destruction. With the New Learning, the relative peace and easier travel the 18th century brought, antiquarianism flowered. Even before 1800 enthusiasts were busy sketching parts of Tudor London before they disappeared; and as enthusiasm for the Gothic and for the pre-Raphaelite world expanded, new discoveries were made – and sometimes faked.

About the speaker

Gillian Tindall became the President of LAMAS in February 2020. She is an accomplished novelist and biographer, as well as an acclaimed historian of place. Among her books are: The Fields Beneath (1977), which explores the history of the London neighbourhood of Kentish Town, and The House by the Thames (2006), which is about the house built at 49 Bankside in London in 1710 and the buildings that preceded it on the site.

She is well known to many members of the Society through the enthusiastic support she has given to the Historic Buildings and Conservation Committee over a number of years. In 2016 she published The Tunnel Through Time: A New Route For An Old London Journey, which explores the layers of history that lie beneath the route of London's newest (though somewhat delayed) underground railway, the Elizabeth Line.
