Event description

Description

The Kalisher Trust is delighted to be able to announce that the cast for this year's play reading event will be led by international screen and stage star, Cate Blanchett.

The Kalisher Players present another world premiere play reading on 24th March in Middle Temple Hall.

Playwright, Diane Samuels is the unique voice among British women dramatists whose multi-award winning Kindertransport defined her ability to tackle major political and philosophical issues with a perfect balance of rigor and wit.

Land of the Free interrogates the conflict between personal and political love as seen in the context of political discourse in the United States from the hysteria of the McCarthy era to the year of the Twin Towers attack. Inspired by real figures and their extraordinary experiences at the hands of the FBI as machine of the American state, her play explores the true price of freedom and the cost of devoting one’s life to fighting for a more just world.

Performed by the usual high-profile Kalisher cast (to be announced soon) and aided this year by a live score of American Jazz, Diane Samuel’s extraordinary and endlessly witty play is suffused with warmth and passion, and wears its rigorous intellect lightly and confidently.

At times cold hard debate, at times dream reality the piece is designed to maximise the potential of the Kalisher Reading ‘radio drama’ format, with locations shifting from lake-side natural calm to frenetic New York, all fused with the jazz choices of characters which define their journey.

Directed by Joe Harmston.

The play reading will run for a max of 90 minutes straight through.
