About this Event

Join a National Park archaeologist for a gentle walk through an ancient landscape steeped in history.

We start by exploring medieval Alnham with its long since abandoned thriving village now only recognisable by subtle grassy lumps and bumps, including the remains of a tower house on a hill overlooking the present church.

Your guide will then reveal the secrets of the landscape, including a second village hidden from tarmacked roads and main thoroughfares.

Going back further in time we walk to an iron age hillfort & an iron age settlement where we will find out more about the people who lived and farmed in this beautiful but tough landscape some 3,000 years ago.

We will bring this up to date and talk about how farming today continues to shape the landscape as Alnham’s ancestors have done.

Lastly, we will return to Alnham church, currently being restored as a community resource, and learn about the fascinating history of the place hidden amongst the gravestones.

Funding for this walk is provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
