Course Overview
Open to anyone, this course welcomes both beginners and experienced sketchers who are drawn to the dynamic beauty of urban spaces. Whether you’re new to city sketching or looking to develop your style, you’ll receive guidance and encouragement in a warm, supportive setting.
You'll learn how to observe and interpret the built environment — from bustling streetscapes and historic facades to quiet parks and contemporary structures — turning your observations into expressive, character-rich drawings.
Teaching Approach
Each week, we’ll explore a new urban theme or location, combining indoor lessons with outdoor sketching (weather permitting). Through live demonstrations, group discussions, and individual feedback, you’ll develop your eye for composition, scale, and storytelling through art. Expect to experiment with different techniques and materials, while building your confidence and creative voice.
What You’ll Learn
By the end of this 10-session course, you will:• Gain foundational skills in perspective, scale, and architectural sketching.• Learn to quickly capture movement, atmosphere, and detail in ever-changing urban scenes.• Develop your own sketching style through guided practice and experimentation.• Curate your work for public display in our group Summer Exhibition.
Required Resources and Costs
We’ll provide drawing boards for indoor sessions. Please bring your own sketchbook (A4 or A3 size recommended) and preferred materials — such as pencils, fine liners, ink, watercolours, or coloured pencils. For outdoor sessions, we recommend a portable stool or mat, and weather-appropriate clothing.
