Description

A day exploring the wonderful properties of the ancient medium of egg tempera. The day will start with a of a short introduction to egg tempera painting. This will include tips on the preparation of appropriate surfaces on which to work, how to grind and mix pigment, how to make an egg emulsion and mix it with pigment. This will be followed by a demonstration. In the afternoon each participant will be able to experiment and create a painting using this vibrant and versatile medium. The day will finish with questions and a group discussion.

Each participant will be provided with a handmade gesso surface by the masterclass leader. There will be pigment for general use, but please bring any you may have.

Recommended materials by tutor: A small selection of brushes, an image of a landscape from which to work, this can be a photo or a drawing, palette knife, a hardish pencil, at least two small receptacles for mixing (rinsed out recycling is fine), palette, a couple of eggs.

The workshop will take place in the north gallery, please arrive via the main gallery entrance on The Mall.

There will be a break for lunch between 1pm - 2pm. Participants are welcome to bring their own lunch and use the café facilities where they will receive 1 free hot drink and also 10% discount in the bookshop on the day.

Please consider how you will transport your wet paintings and drawings as there will be no overnight storage available.
