Workshop Details

Cathy is going to demostrate a Lakeland scene with stone walls, distant hills and a farmhouse sat on a farm track. Working with composition & perspective we will be using values and colour variations to make for an interesting landscape. You will finish the workshop with a picture you will be proud of as well as taking away plenty of new tips and techniques.

About the Artist

An award winning artist, Catherine works predominantly in soft pastels with a wide variety of subjects and is well known for her wildlife work.

She specialises in commission work for portraits and pet & animal portraits.

She has regularly exhibited in the Westminster Gallery and The Mall Galleries London, also with The Kennel Club Art Gallery, London. She exhibits widely throughout the U.K. and has held several joint and solo exhibitions.

In 2005 She was elected to full membership of the Society of Women Artists and in 2011 won two awards, The Frank Herring & Son Easel Award and Jacksons People's' Choice Award at the Society's Celebratory 150th SWA Exhibition held in the Mall Galleries London. Following in 2014 with the presentation of The Winsor & Newton Fine Art Award at the SWA annual exhibition in the Mall Galleries.

Her work hangs in many areas of the UK, also China, Europe, South Africa, Australia and the USA. She is included in Who's Who in Art.


Materials to Bring

A clear and interesting image to work from

Soft pastels but not any oil pastels

Unison soft pastels; A34, A36, A43, A49, BE6, BE7, BE8, BE9, BE10, BE12, BE18, GY1 and GY27

Sennelier’s darkest browns & purple greys 478, 463, 177, 002 and 456

Conté à Paris Carres square pastels no. 80 Vandyke Brown & 2464 sketching Portrait Brown.

These are just suggestions, you can bring any pastels of your choosing depending on what you’d like to paint.

An old tea towel for keeping the hands clean

Baby wipes or a damp flannel

An old oil painting brush and a rubber to get rid of any mistakes, pastel is very forgiving

UArt Sanded or Canson Mi-tientes Touch Paper in A3 or 16 x 12"

All materials are available to purchase from Calder Graphics if needed.

Materials Provided

Calder Art will provide the following materials for the workshop:

1 x Table Top Easel

1 x MDF Board in various sizes

1 x Paint Pot

1 x Palette or Plate

Masking Tape and other sundry products are also available.


Minimum numbers apply for courses to run. Payment is due in full at the time of booking, either through the shop, phone or online. All sales are final unless transferring to another class in which a difference in price will be paid. Full refunds will be given if the courses cannot take place. If you cannot make the classes for any reason no refunds will be given.

Refreshments are available all day (tea, coffee, biscuits etc.) and there will be a lunch break of approximately one hour. Unfortunately the Blue Rooms Cafe is in the process of opening under new management so in the meantime local shops and cafes in the area are available and within close walking distance to the arcade. Alternatively you may bring your own lunch.

The nearest car park available to the venue is the multi-storey next to Huddersfield bus station. All details are found on the link below. The cost of the car park is £2.00 for 3 hours (all levels) or £4.00 for 10 hours (upper two levels only


Our venue is also a 2 minute walk from both the main bus and train stations.
