About this event

Other

Use AAC (alternative and augmentative communication) to unlock the potential of non-speaking individuals with Language Acquisition Through Motor Planning (LAMP) approach - a dynamic, research-backed approach that harnesses neurological and motor learning principles to encourage independent, spontaneous communication using a speech generating device. This engaging and enlightening course invites educators, therapists, and families to explore how AAC and motor planning supports language development for those who are non or minimally speaking.

Whilst the approach was originally developed for autistic communicators, it has been found to be as powerful with other non or minimally-speaking individuals across the globe.

What you can expect from the day:

  • A deep dive into the foundations of LAMP and why it works
  • Real-world video examples showcasing LAMP in action
  • Tips for overcoming sensory challenges and valuing personal interests
  • Insights into features that support motor learning on Liberator AAC devices and Apps
  • Practical strategies for teaching and tracking progress

📚 Learning Outcomes:

  • Define the role of readiness to learn and shared focus in the implementation of AAC with children with ASD and DD.
  • Explain the importance of using motor patterning to develop motor automaticity for children with ASD and DD who use AAC.
  • Examine multisensory convergence and the implications of how interference in this system disrupts speech and language development.
  • Discuss implementation strategies for teaching children with ASD and DD to use AAC.
  • Discuss strategies for analyzing the efficacy of communication treatment.

All who support non or minimally speaking people are welcome, inlcuding therapy teams, educators, families or support staff.

Liberator language systems and devices will be used to illustrate treatment components; however, LAMP principles can be applied to other products.

Moving forward with LAMP on iOS - webinar 4th December 2025 2-5pm GMT

To compliment the knowledge you will gain on the 1-day workshop, we are excited to also include admission to our follow-on webinar ‘Moving forward with LAMP on iOS’ presented by Stefanie Olson from Center for AAC and Autism.

This online course is designed to further the communication partner’s ability to implement the Language Acquisition through Motor Planning approach at different language stages and across environments. The language structure of the LAMP Words for Life language system and use of device features to support language learning will be explored.

This is a hands-on learning opportunity. It is expected that attendees will have an iOS device with the LAMP Words for Life app in-hand to participate in this training. Prior to the training, make sure to update your app to a minimum of version 2025.4.2 and iOS to the latest version. If you do not have the app, you may download the free 30-day trial app, LAMP Words for Life Discover. Make sure to start the trial within 30 days of the course so it is still active for the class!

Discussion will include assessing current language level, setting goals for developmental progression, and analysing data logging. The presenter will cover a variety of strategies and supports to support language development such as expanding vocabulary in natural environments, modeling, teaching the motor plan, and how to use aided language input. Videotaped sessions will be used for group discussion about strategies that work and common mistakes. Suggestions for language development in school settings will also be addressed.
