Exploring Aspects of the Feminine Divine, 2018 Lecture Series

Following on from the 2017 series, which explored thealogy in a post-human world; the feminine divine within the context of the feminist movement and defining a New (non patriarchal) Story for humanity, the Institute for Theological Partnerships is delighted to offer three diverse lectures on the Feminine Divine for 2018.

This year, the lectures will explore the themes of thealogy and ecology; race, gender and feminist politics and the secret language of the Goddess in dance.

The lectures are free to attend, simply book your place online or by email/ phone from Joanna.Wilson@Winchester.ac.uk or 01962 826 421

The last lecture in the series this year is

Language of the Goddess in Women’s Traditional Circle Dances
Women's circle dances of Greece and the Balkans have roots in the earliest Goddess-reverent cultures of Old Europe. Symbols encoded in traditional dance patterns, song texts and textile motifs have served as a nonverbal language from Neolithic times to the present day. This lecture will examine the message of this language and how it emphasises an ethic of community, sustainability, shared leadership, mutual support, creativity and peacefulness: these are the values of the Goddess, as articulated by Marija Gimbutas, Carol P Christ, Riane Eisler and others.

Laura Shannon has researched and taught traditional circle dances for over thirty years, and is seen as one of the ‘grandmothers’ of the worldwide Sacred / Circle Dance movement. She holds degrees in Intercultural Studies and Dance Movement Therapy, and is currently pursuing postgraduate studies at Canterbury Christ Church University in Kent.
