Languages Strategy Showcase
The Languages Strategy Group invites all University of Liverpool colleagues to join us for the Languages Strategy showcase on Wednesday 27th September 12.30pm-4.30pm.
There are three sessions, and you can attend one, two or all. Please let us know your choices by booking tickets for each one.
Session 1: Networking Lunch
An informal opportunity to find out more about the key partners involved in the University’s Languages Strategies: the Confucius Institute, Continuing Education, the English Language Centre, and academic departments in the School of Histories, Languages and Cultures (Modern Languages and Cultures; Archaeology, Classics, and Egyptology). Meet representatives of our language providers over a sandwich lunch.
Session 2: Open Briefing: Languages Strategy and Open Languages
Professor Matthew Philpotts (Head of Modern Languges and Cultures), Professor Liz Sheffield (APVC Education, Faculty of Science and Engineering), and Diane Appleton (Careers and Employabilty Service) will introduce the main elements in the University’s ambitious new Languages Strategy and explain the context within which it will advance language and intercultural skills in the University. This will be followed by a briefing on the University’s new institution-wide language programme, Open Languages, that launches in September 2017.
The Open Languages Programme will support every UoL student to engage in Language study. The first phase provides the opportunity for all students to take individual language modules; either for credit, where their programme allows, or additionally to their curriculum, for a fee. This briefing is open to all and will be particularly useful for academic and professional services colleagues involved in student guidance and advice, timetabling, study abroad, admissions, internationalisation leads, and programme directors interested in supporting their students to take language modules either as extra-curricular opportunities or as part of their programmes.
Session 3: Centre of Excellence in Language Teaching
Dr Ulrike Bavendiek (Director, UoL Centre of Excellence in Language Teaching) and Professor Kris Spelman-Miller (APVC Education, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences) will lead series of discussion sessions and workshops in which language-teaching professionals across our language providers will be able to share existing examples of their scholarship in language pedagogy and applied linguistics, as well as identifying common areas for future development and collaboration. This will be the first event in the founding phase of our new Centre of Excellence.
