Bangladesh Association Glasgow (BAG) and Glasgowf Museums have taken up a project to explore the Legacy of sailors from Bangladesh on the shores of Scotland.
’LASCAR’ was the collective term used for colonial seafarers who served the European merchant navy from 17th century onwards. These sailors also became part of the Royal Indian Navy, helping the Empire in great wars of last century. Yet their contribution is still underrated and somewhat forgotten.
The play is about how the boatmen in the rivers of Bangladesh became Lascars in the ocean ships and eventually the challenges they faced during their settlement in Scotland.
