Course description:

This course is aimed at clinicians, nurses, operating department practitioners, medical physicists, technicians and others working with medical, surgical or ophthalmic lasers. The course covers all aspects of the ‘Core of Knowledge’ defined in the MHRA Guidance on the safe use of lasers, intense light source systems and LEDs in medical, surgical, dental and aesthetic practices. This course is delivered completely online. It consists of a set of pre-recorded presentations, participation in a live webinar and an online quiz. The user must book onto the course by emailing radprot@uhs.nhs.uk

The live webinar explores the topic of ‘Practical Laser Safety’ including risk assessment along with a Q&A session where you can ask any questions about any of the course content. Once you have participated in the live webinar and passed the online open-book quiz within 5 attempts, you are eligible for your course certificate. The certificate will be available for up to one month after quiz completion and is valid for 5 years.

Course aim:

Two weeks before the webinar, participants are given access to the pre-recorded presentations via the UHS’ Virtual Learning Environment website.

The areas covered are:

  • Characteristics of laser radiation
  • Laser hazards and interactions with tissue
  • Safety procedures and hazard control methods
  • Legislation and safety standards

All presentations must be watched before joining the live webinar and, as a guide, you will need around 5 hours to watch them.
